Three years ago, the Philippines experienced the onslaught of the strongest typhoon ever to make landfall. Typhoon Yolanda marked the era of the “new normal” which calls for a more proactive action to unprecedented impacts of climate change and disasters.
However, just recently, Typhoons Karen and Lawin seriously devastated the northern part of the country leaving the people and infrastructure in perilous conditions.
Today, as we commemorate Typhoon Yolanda’s 3rd year and strengthen our concerted action towards disaster preparedness and resiliency, the YesPinoy Foundation Inc., a non-profit organization created in 2009 by its Founder and Chairman Jose Sixto “Dingdong” G. Dantes III, in partnership with Taclob, a Tacloban-based social enterprise that produces emergency bags made by Typhoon Yolanda survivors, launches the Go Bags Challenge: An Emergency Kit for Every Filipino.
The Go Bags Challenge aims to provide Hooded Cloak Backpacks with emergency kits and learners’ materials to young people in vulnerable public schools particularly in areas affected by Typhoons Karen and Lawin, as identified by the Department of Education.
The Go Bags Hooded Cloak Backpack is made from water-proof materials designed to protect the child from the torrential rain and even from the scorching sun’s rays. It has two compartments for emergency survival items and basic school supplies.
The Project is also intended to ensure the sustainability of the livelihood of women and men in Tacloban, who have survived the wrath of Typhoon Yolanda and have been empowered to rebuild their lives and community by helping others through their skills in bag making.
The Go Bags Challenge will be made possible through the generosity of private partners and individual donors, who would like to extend a hand in securing the future of this generation amidst the threat of climate change and disasters.
