We, the 3.6 million Filipino voices representing #NowPH who called for climate action in the Paris Climate Change Conference held last year, join the celebration of the World Environment Day today, June 5, 2016.

We also commend the political will of the Philippine Government and other stakeholders to push for a resilient, more sustainable and low-carbon future. Key government agencies such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Climate Change Commission (CCC), among others, have already formally signified their endorsement and support to the ratification of the Paris Agreement by adopting Resolution 2016-002 in the Cabinet Cluster on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation.

The Paris Agreement is the new legally-binding deal that strengthens global response to climate change in order to arrest global warming below 2 degrees Celsius and even pursue efforts to achieve the 1.5 degree Celsius target.

We would also like to recognize the Commission Resolution of CCC that mandates the “urgent and comprehensive” review of the government’s energy policy. This timely policy instrument does not only contribute in achieving the country’s pledge to lessen our greenhouse gas emissions by 70% in 2030, but also leads in attaining this nation’s climate change adaptation and mitigation, and disaster risk reduction and management goal.

May these milestones serve as guide and challenge to each and every Filipino especially the youth, who signed up for #NowPH, and to our next set of leaders to further advance the welfare of this generation and the next to come.

And while we laud these efforts, we remain steadfast with our commitment to significantly share in addressing the challenge brought by climate change and disasters. This year, we will turn our VOICES into ACTION… because there is no other way and no other time but NOW!
